How to Frame a Door in Metal Walls
To save time and make installation easier, you should use a pre-hung door for this project. The packaging will have the dimensions for the rough opening and jamb printed on it to make calculations and measurements simple. Build a new door frame following the diagram here. The new frame will support the structural load of the wall when the existing supports have been removed.
The parts that come together to form a door frame include: the cripple studswhich transfer the wall load from the top plate to the door header. The header is supported by the jack and king studs along the sides where the load is transferred to the soleplate, which in turn transfers the load to the floor joists and foundation.
To start an opening in an interior wall, first remove the plaster or drywall on both sides of the wall. Leave as much of the original drywall in place as possible when doing "demo" work to avoid extensive wall repairs later.
With the wall covering removed, there are two choices for removing the existing framing to make room for a new door. Saving the studs may be the easiest way, but both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Removing them completely will mean an easier cutting job, but require additional framing and wall repair. Preserving them can make repairing the wall easier, but cutting them off straight can be difficult. Remove the plaster or drywall to this point and cut a straight line across the studs you want to save.
Widening a Closet Door
Measure from the finished floor and use a square to mark both faces and edges of the wood. Use a handsaw to cut squarely along the lines to ensure a good, flush fit against the header you will be adding. To avoid binding of the saw blade while you're cutting, wedge 2x4's between the floor and top plate to support the wall weight. If you're working on a load bearing wall, leave the supports in place until you have installed all the new framing.
If you want to remove the studs completely and install new ones, wedge in the supports under the top plate and then cut roughly, mid-way down the wall using a reciprocating saw.
How to Frame with Metal Studs
Pry the two pieces free from the top and soleplate being careful at the top to avoid breaking a lot of the drywall or plaster off the ceiling. This extra space will allow for adjusting the position of the new door jamb for a plumb fit. Choose an existing studs to serve as the first king stud and then determine if it's necessary to install a new one on the other side, or if one of the studs can be shimmed to do the job.
If you can't find two ideal candidates to serve as king studs, which is very likely, you'll have to add a new 2x4 on one side of the new opening.Vet emergency quiz
To find the location for the second king stud, add the jamb width, plus 3 inches for jacks, and 1 inch for wiggle room. Measure from the inside of the first king stud and mark this point on the soleplate. Keep this measurement and use it again to cut the header length in the next phase of the framing.
If the stud is several inches or more from the mark you can add spacers to build out the new 2x4. Cut 2 or 3 pieces of 2x4 to this length and nail them between the new 2x4 and the existing one. Measure from the wall top plate to the soleplate and cut a new 2x4 to this length, then install it using two-3 inch deck screws on each end. Drive the screws at an angle to "toenail" it to the plates. You can drill pilot holes first to make driving these screws smoother, and improve control.Volume 1 number 2 (aug. 2010)
This also makes it easier to reposition in case of error in placement. If you need to use spacers to support the new 2x4, install them first before putting the stud in place. Fasten these with 16d framing nails and a hammer and cut the header with a circular saw to fit between the outside framing studs. Set the header in place between the two full studs and under the cut-off top stud. Use a level to set the header level and fasten it with framing nails through the side studs and two nails driven up into the bottom of the short stud on top.
Measure from the bottom of the header to the top of the sill and cut two studs to fit.
Nail these to the side studs and toenail them with diagonal nails into the header and sill. Cut the sill plate out on the inside of the two trim studs with reciprocal saw. Remove the temporary braces once the rough frame is completed and install the pre-hung door in the rough frame.

I have published this project only to show what I did. The idea was good, but clearly I did not know as much as I thought I knew, a problem that I share in common with lot of self-proclaimed do-it-yourselfers.
Once I became engaged, it became apparent that I needed to use any available space much more efficiently. The master bedroom had a wall closet about 5 and a half feet wide with a standard depth. Access to this closet was originally through a door that was only 24 inches wide. At least half of the space in the closet was inconvenient, if not impossible, to access. The solution? Widen the doorway and install two 30 inch bi-fold doors to access the entire closet.
After ensuring that I would not be messing with a supporting wall, I went to work inside the closet. The walls were gypsum board and plaster and were up to an inch thick in places so my stud finder was not able to accurately detect the studs. I had to open the wall up to find the studs the old fashioned way. I carefully used a keyhole saw to cut a couple of holes inside the closet so I could see exactly what framing I was working with.
My stud finder is able to detect electrical current and I was able to determine that no wires were present where I was cutting. Still, I carefully opened up a couple larger holes just to be sure. Once I confirmed that it was safe to do so, I used a reciprocating saw to cut the wall board flush to the studs that were not going to be removed. It was a messy job to say the least.
The wall board was removed up to the top plate that was attached to the ceiling joists. A bottom plate was nailed to the floor boards and I now had now exposed couple of 2 x 4 studs. I removed the studs to create the opening that I needed. Now I needed to rebuild the header and do something about the void that was left once the bottom plate was removed from the floor.
I stained the board with the same walnut stain that I used on the bi-fold doors. Using a circular saw set to the depth of the hardwood flooring, I cut out a section to the width of the board.
